About the Book

A reader of chivalric romances decides to become a knight. With Sancho Panza beside him, Don Quixote sets out across Spain, repeatedly mistaking the world around him for the adventures he has imagined. Cervantes turns that mismatch into a novel about friendship, ambition and the stories people use to explain their lives.

Idealism and Experience

The book invites readers to consider when conviction becomes self-deception, and how loyalty survives disappointment. Its humor leaves room for sympathy toward a man whose aspirations exceed his judgment.

Elliot's Reading Perspective

During his October 18, 2026 C-SPAN America's Book Club conversation with Admiral James Stavridis and David Rubenstein, Elliot Ackerman said he was reading Don Quixote and praised it. Earlier in the conversation, he brought up the novel while discussing writers with military experience.

The linked paperback is the Penguin Classics edition translated by John Rutherford, with an introduction by Roberto González Echevarría (ISBN 9780142437230, published February 25, 2003). The Apple Books and Kobo ebook links also use Rutherford's translation. Elliot did not identify his translation in the interview.
